WHITE ROSE HERBS

Back in the 1980s we set up a little herb business - White Rose Herbs.

This started off as a hobby.  We found herbs such interesting plants so started growing them then giving surplus away at work.  These proved so popular that we ended up developing it into a side-line business.  We grew and sold herbs, we had herb merchandise and herb products.  We grew clumps of herbs in pots for sale. this was unusual as generally people sold single plants.  We were even in demand locally for giving talks and presentations.

We ended up with a catalogue with well over 100 herbs in there.  We even had a market stall that we would ferry about to craft fairs etc.  We were clearly ahead of our time as this wasn't a common business back then but now there are herb growers all over the place and fresh herbs in pots are available in supermarkets -just as we used to sell them.

It was a very labour intensive business though, especially alongside full-time jobs (and trying to build a kit-car) so when a child came along, even though we had got the business finally into profit, we had no choice but to stop doing it.

Dandelion is a very useful herb.  It is a diuretic and has the country name of piss-a-bed.  Obviously we didn't offer it in the catalogue.  Dandelion clocks make such fascinating subjects I thought it worth letting them have a small gallery of their own
