We live in beautiful North Yorkshire in a small village just to the
north of the old walled city of York. North Yorkshire used to be
a Viking area and York was a major Viking town (Jorvik). Also in
its history it was Roman city (Eboracum). York still has its old
city walls, an exciting Viking
museum based on a reconstruction of part of Jorvik, historic buildings,
a large museum which needs around two days to visit, a football club, an
increasing range of leisure time activities and..and...and...
Maggie and I (and Tom now) were all born in Yorkshire. It's a
beautiful county with York as a jewel set in a plain which then reaches
out to a wild and rugged coastline, rolling moors, dales and rocky hilly
areas and forests. Yorkshire has a bit of everything.
On the coast are tiny fishing villages such as Robin Hood's Bay,
and fishing ports like Whitby
(famous for its Captain Cook links), and tourist towns such as Scarborough.
The Moors are gently undulating but need treating with respect. Here
there is the preserved steam railway, the North
Yorkshire Moors Railway. On the edge of the Moors are attractive
bustling market towns such as Kirkbymoorside, Pickering, Helmsley.
The Dales are further to the west and are breathaking in their beauty.
James Herriot (celebrity vet) did much to broadcast the appeal of this
beautiful area.
One day I'll start getting some pictures together - they give a much
